With an enrollment of 1,898 students, Newton South has roughly 250 fewer students than its counterpart, Newton North. Despite its Newton Centre address, the school is actually located more in the village of Oak Hill, south of Boylston Street (Route 9), in a quiet, suburban neighborhood.

Built in 1960, Newton South is an impressive complex, complete with turf football/soccer field, track, baseball fields, tennis courts, and more.

Getting to School

Newton offers a bus for Newton South students. The cost to take the bus is $465 per year and there is a $930 family cap. Anyone wishing to ride the bus must complete the bus bus registration. The list of bus stops to Newton South is long.

The MBTA is a viable option for Newton South students too. There is a bus that stops near the school:

  • Bus 52 - Parker St. and Roosevelt OR Parker St. and Parker Rd. Roosevelt Street leads directly to the entrance to the school on Brandeis Road and is a half mile away.

Parking

Parking passes at Newton South are issued on a first-come/first-served basis at the beginning of each school year. The school has parking lot space for students, and the School Committee sets the cost for parking there. Students also have the option of parking on one of the streets in the area but should pay attention to parking signs. Parking on all residential streets is free.

Administration

A principal and vice principal oversee the school, and each grade is assigned to one of the four houses (Cutler, Goldrick, Goodwin, and Wheeler), which is run by a Dean. There are also department heads, school counselors, college and career counselors, and school psychologists.

Open Campus

Newton South has an open campus policy beginning second semester sophomore year. That means students are allowed to leave the campus during free blocks or lunch. Freshman and first semester sophomores are not permitted to be outside the school building without adult supervision during the school day. They are assigned study hall during their unscheduled blocks.

Newton South has two school newspapers, The Lion’s Roar and Denebola.

Arts

Newton South offers a rich program for students interested in music, visual arts and theater. Newton South's High School Theater Company, South Stage, puts on a number of performances every year that are widely attended. 

Athletics

Newton South, home of the Lions, has a variety of athletic teams and competes in baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, and wrestling.

Special Study Opportunities

Finally, Newton South also offers a number of unique programs that it terms interdisciplinary studies including the five listed below.

  • da Vinci Program - The da Vinci Program is a three-year STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) beginning in Grade 10.
  • Global Justice Program - A three year program beginning in Grade 10 that seeks to examine race, gender, socioeconomics, religion, sexual orientation, and climate.
  • International Travel Program - Studying abroad is an indispensable opportunity offered by Newton South and offers a rich array of subject-specific travel & other global education opportunities.
  • New Media Communities Program - A two-year program beginning in Grade 10. New Media Communities combines English and History with project-based work in media analysis and media production.
  • Work Study Program - Newton South provides select students with opportunities to enhance their academic experience by integrating employment into the learning process.
  • WISE Program - Allows qualified seniors to spend Term 4 working on a substantial academic project of their own design on a part-time or full-time basis.
