Franklin Elementary School is located in West Newton and serves some 299 students from the area. A new school is currently under construction and occupancy is anticipated to be February 2027.
Built in 1938 with additions added in 1950 and 1953, the original school façade provides a distinct presence along residential Derby Street. This two-story school backs up to a 2.7 acre park with two baseball fields, basketball court, and climbing structures for children.
Franklin School is in a densely populated part of Newton, surrounded by neighborhood homes in all directions. With its proximity to Waltham and Watertown Streets, the school is conveniently located near Waltham and Watertown, and a short distance from the Massachusetts Turnpike for those commuting into Boston by car or areas West of Newton.
A short drive west of Franklin Elementary on Derby Street leads to Moody Street in Waltham where there are a number of restaurants and local businesses including Shoppers Cafe, Burger King, and more.
The school is not easily accessible via public transportation. There are a few buses (the 553, 554, and 556) that run in the general area, but none are particularly close.
