Horace Mann serves some 342 students from Newtonville. Located near the border of Watertown and Waltham, and close to the Charles River, Horace Mann is a two-story building adjoining a 7.8 acre park.
As part of its ongoing effort to invest in schools, the city of Newton is in the midst of interior renovations at Horace Mann. Six new classrooms, a new caretorium, music room, and new playground are being worked on. While that is happening, staff and students are at 191 Pearl Street for the 2025-26 school year and will move back to their renovated and enlarged home. That's anticipated to happen in September 2026.
Horace Mann is flanked by modest homes in the area, and is close to the 556 bus stop at the intersection of Crafts and California Street. The 556 bus runs from Waltham to Newton Corner with a stop at Carter Street, opposite the Commuter Rail Station (Fitchburg Line), which goes to Boston’s North Station or a commuter rail stop (Framingham/Worcester Line) at Walnut and Washington Street in Newton that goes to Back Bay Station and South Station.
Horace Mann is near ample commercial activity in Watertown and Waltham, including BJs Wholesale, and a variety of restaurants and shopping.
