Newton Middle School

Some 2,646 students attend the four Newton public middle schools that run from sixth through eighth grade (6-8).

The City has mapped each area to a school. There are some streets that fall into a “buffer zone” which simply means a child may attend one of two schools. View Middle School districts.

Two of the middle schools are in south Newton (the south side of Route 9), and two are in north Newton (the north side of Route 9).

Middle school hours vary. Each school starts and ends at a different time. Times are Monday through Friday as follows:

  • Bigelow: 7:55 a.m. - 2:25 p.m. (early release Wednesdays at 1:40 p.m.)
  • Brown: 8:20 a.m. - 2:50 p.m. (early release Wednesdays at 2:05 p.m.)
  • Day: 7:55 a.m. - 2:25 p.m. (early release Wednesdays at 1:40 p.m.)
  • Oak Hill: 7:50 a.m. - 2:20 p.m. (early release Wednesdays at 1:35 p.m.)

While some students walk to school or get a ride, others take the bus. 6th grade students that live MORE than 2 miles from their school do NOT pay a fee to take the bus. Students who live LESS than 2 miles from the school, pay a fee of $465. And 7th and 8th graders pay $465 to ride the bus regardless of how far they live from school. In addition, there is a family cap of $930 to ride the bus. In this case it pays to have more children! Anyone wishing to ride the bus must complete the bus registration.

The list of bus stops is large with buses transporting students to all four middle schools. View the Newton public school bus stops.

Beginning in 6th grade, Newton offers the study of Chinese, French, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish.

Newton middle schools offer a number of extracurricular activities in Fine Arts including Jr. District Music Festival. The Fine Arts Department also offers students the opportunity for private instrumental music lessons through the Music Lesson Extension Program.

In addition, the middle schools all have teams for 7th and 8th graders that compete in athletics. The sports include: soccer and cross country in the fall; basketball in the winter; and lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and ultimate frisbee in the spring. Sixth graders are invited to the fall cross country and spring track and field teams.
