Newton has two public high schools, Newton North and Newton South, that serve some 4,015 students. Commonwealth Avenue (commonly referred to as Comm Ave.) is the unofficial dividing line. Homes North of Comm Ave. generally attend Newton North and families that live to the south generally attend Newton South. There are some exceptions, and there are also some homes that are located in buffer zones which means kids could attend either school.
High school hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 3:45 PM with an early release Tuesdays at 3:25 PM.
Newton offers a bus for high school students. The cost to take the bus is $465 per year and there is a $930 family cap. Anyone wishing to ride the bus must complete the Bus Registration. The list of bus stops is large. You can view Newton North bus stops and Newton South stops.
An alternative to taking the Newton Public School bus is the MBTA. Using the MBTA is a viable option for high school students. Student Charlie Cards (S-Cards) can be obtained in the front office at either high school or from the NPS transportation department. A student card is valid for one year, from Sept. 1st - Aug. 31st. A new one must be obtained each year.
