With an enrollment of 2,096 students, Newton North has slightly more students than Newton South. The school is located in the village of Newtonville, and is one of the largest high schools in Massachusetts, spanning some 413,000 square feet.
After a massive $197 Million renovation, Newton North reopened in the fall of 2010. Rated Gold by LEED, the most widely used green building rating system, Newton North is broken down into three major wings, athletics, the academic core and the theater, all linked by a luminous glass lobby that serves as one of two front doors into the school. For comparison sake, Platinum is the highest a building can be rated by LEED, followed by Gold, Silver and Certified.
Getting to School
Newton offers a bus for Newton North students. The cost to take the bus is $465 per year and there is a $930 family cap. Anyone wishing to ride the bus must complete the bus registration. The list of bus stops is large.
The MBTA is a viable option for Newton North students too. There are three buses that stop near the school:
Parking
Parking at Newton North can be challenging. The school holds a lottery for student parking every year. There are only 165 permits available.
Administration
A principal and vice principal oversee the school, and each grade is assigned to one of the four houses (Beals, Adams, Barry, and Riley), which is run by a Dean. There are also department heads, school counselors, college and career counselors, and school psychologists.

Open Campus
Newton North has an open campus policy beginning second semester sophomore year. That means students are allowed to leave the campus during free blocks or lunch. Freshman and first semester sophomores are not permitted to be outside the school building without adult supervision during the school day. They are assigned study hall during their unscheduled blocks.
Publications
Newton North has several options for students interested in media including the school newspaper, The Newtonite; the school yearbook, The Newtonian; the school’s literary magazine, Thoughtprints; and the school TV station, Newton North TV.
Fine Arts
The Newton North Fine & Performing Arts Department encompasses the disciplines of Arts, Music, Theatre, & Dance. The school offers over 50 courses ranging from photography, to technical theater, to film scoring.
Athletics
Newton North, home of the Tigers, has a variety of athletic teams. From mainstays like basketball, football, baseball and hockey to newer sports like esports, the Tigers take their athletics seriously and have invested a lot into their athletic facilities.
Finally, Newton North also offers a number of unique programs and initiatives for students to take advantage of as well as a number of clubs and activities.
