The Bigelow School is located in the north-eastern part of Newton, on Vernon Street in the village of Newton Corner, just down the road from the Underwood Elementary School. Bigelow is situated two minutes from the on-ramp to the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90), and a short ride to Boston College, Oak Square, and Brighton Center.
The MBTA 57 and 501 buses stop along Tremont Street, one street away, and parallel to Vernon Street. There’s a stop at Hibbard Street and Tremont Street that is literally around the corner from Bigelow. The 57 bus goes to Kenmore Square in Boston, and the 501 goes to Copley Square and downtown Boston’s financial district.
Some 434 students from Newton Corner, Nonantum, Newtonville, Chestnut Hill, and Newton Centre attend Bigelow which means that students from both sides of the Massachusetts Turnpike go to the school. It is the smallest middle school in Newton from an enrollment perspective. For comparison sake, Day Middle School has nearly double the number of students.
Bigelow opened in 1967 and was renovated in 1993. The school offers a number of athletic programs to students including cross country, soccer and flag football in the fall; basketball in the winter; and track and field, baseball, softball, and lacrosse in the spring.
In addition, the school offers a number of clubs, drama, and The Bulldog (a literary magazine) as activities for students to engage in.
Bigelow utilizes Burr Park across the street from the school. Burr Park is 5.1 acres and has a preschool play area, swings, basketball court, challenge course equipment, four tennis courts, and an open lawn area with irrigated soccer field, softball field/little league field.
