Solomon Schechter was founded in 1961 and serves some 471 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The average class size is 15 and the student to teacher ratio is 8 to 1. Schechter, as it is commonly called, has two campuses about nine minutes apart by car.
Students in K-3 go to the campus at 60 Stein Street while students in grades 4 through 8 are located at 125 Wells Avenue.
The school hours differ by grade:
Both campuses are in the Oak Hill Park part of Newton. The school on Wells Avenue is next to Cutler Park Reservation and the Charles River, while the campus at Stein Street practically backs up to the Brook Farm Walking Trail.
Core subjects taught at Schechter include Hebrew and Jewish Studies, math, social studies, language arts, and science.
Many students stay for enrichment classes and after school activities. Schechter’s two campuses are 97,146 square feet and feature an athletic indoor and outdoor space—including both an indoor and outdoor regulation-size artificial grass soccer field. Middle schoolers can try out for the soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, flag football and ultimate frisbee teams.
Schechter offers visual art, music, theater, and filmmaking.
While public transportation is not an option for those attending Schechter, the school does coordinate transportation in and around Newton, and surrounding areas. There’s even a shuttle bus between campuses so families don’t have to pick up at both locations.
