Memorial-Spaulding School, commonly called Spaulding School, is located on Brookline Street, on the border of South Brookline not far from Skyline Park. The school is close to Newton South High School, and the Newton Jewish Community Center (JCC), a popular place for adults to workout and swim. In addition, it’s close to two well-known soccer club teams for kids, Valeo and The Boston Bolts, as well as the Charles River Country Club and Schecter School.

This is a pretty, suburban neighborhood with minimal commercial activity close to the school. The commercial businesses near the school aren’t businesses that kids would find interesting enough to travel to on their own. Homes in the area are big, and you can get some with sizable yards.

The Street in Chestnut Hill is a roughly five minute drive from the Spaulding School. There you can find plenty of shopping and restaurants, including Wegmans, Star Market, Shake Shack, Legal’s Seafood, Davios, LuluLemon, a movie theater, and much more.

Spaulding School has one of the smaller school yards of all the Newton elementary schools, two acres, but you can still play basketball (they have a full court with glass backboards), soccer, and baseball in the green space. And there’s a school-age play area with swings for the younger children.

Spaulding School is located in the village of Oak Hill and is home to some 342 students. The school was built in 1954 in the classic mid-century modern architectural style. The building was expanded in the early 1960’s, then again in 2001.

The 52 bus, which originates at Watertown Yard and runs to the Dedham Mall through parts of Newton, stops at Dedham Street and Brookline Avenue, an option for families who wish to use public transportation to get to school or work. From Dedham Street, it’s about a quarter of a mile to Spaulding School. Brookline Avenue starts at Dedham Street and runs past Spaulding School into Brookline.
