The Charles E. Brown Middle School is located on the south side of Route 9, next door to Oak Hill Middle School and not far from Newton South High School. Brown, as it is commonly referred to, is located in the village of Oak Hill and serves some 713 students.
Opened in 1956, Brown was last renovated in 1997 and is a sprawling 146,000 square feet. It is located in a residential area, and is close to the Charles River Country Club.
The MBTA 52 bus stops at Wheeler Road and Meadowbrook Road basically in front of the Brown School. The 52 travels from Watertown Yard to Washington Street in Newton, over the Massachusetts Turnpike to Centre Street where it makes a number of stops before picking up Parker Street, going over Route 9, and turning onto Wheeler Road.
The Brown School offers a number of athletic programs to students including cross country and soccer in the fall; basketball in the winter; and track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse and ultimate frisbee in the spring. There are also a number of enrichment activities.
In addition, the school has a chorus, acapella group, a full jazz band, orchestra, and theatre group whose goal is to provide a home for any student who is interested in theater. Whether performing on stage or working behind the scenes (lighting, sound, sets and other aspects of stagecraft and production), students have an opportunity to participate together in a creative collaboration to “tell the story”.
