In 2026, Dexter Southfield school will celebrate its centennial year. Home to some 1,076 Pre-K through 12th grade students, the 100-year old institution is located in South Brookline, across the street from Larz Anderson Auto Museum and Park.
With an impressive 36-acre campus that combines modern on-campus facilities with close proximity to the Boston medical area, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and Newton, Dexter Southfield (a.k.a. Dexter) is a popular school for Brookline families as well as families from all over the state. Students from some 78 communities attend Dexter.
The Kraft Fieldhouse and Arena, opened in 2017, is a best-in-class athletic facility. The school’s website notes that 30% of graduates play college sports, substantially more than the national average of 7%.
The Clay Center for Science and Technology is home to a research-grade observatory and learning center and provides ready access to experimentation, exploration, and research. In the fall of 2020, Dexter Southfield completed the Building a Better Tomorrow initiative, adding 23,000 square feet of academic space to the School. In the fall of 2021, the School opened the Dexter Southfield Squash Center and "The Garage," an 8,000-square foot Innovation Center for students in Classes 6-8.
Dexter Southfield is divided into three schools (Lower, Middle and Upper). The lower school serves children from Pre-K through 5th grade; the middle school houses 6th through 8th graders; and the upper school consists of some 440 high school students.
Dexter puts a huge emphasis on public speaking and all of its students participate in public speaking opportunities.
While the Dexter Southfield neighborhood is close to several cities and towns, it’s not easily accessible via public transportation and there isn’t much to do in the immediate area except attend school or go to the park. The closest public transportation is the MBTA 60 bus that stops on Lee Street near the corner of Newton Street. However, Dexter Southfield tuition includes bus transportation, lunch, laboratory fees, and athletic fees.p>
